Our Tucson Plumbers Offer DIY Solutions To Unclogging a Toilet

Most of us have experienced a clogged toilet at least once in our lives. If you’re dealing with a clogged toilet, follow our DIY solutions to flush your worries away. If you need the help of a professional, contact Curtis Plumbing in Tucson, AZ.

Using a Plunger

With a toilet plunger, also known as a flange plunger, you can clear a clog quickly. Get on a pair of rubber gloves and prepare the work area by using old towels or plastic wrap as a catchall for dirty water or debris that may spill. Pour enough water into the toilet bowl so that you can fully submerge the plunger. The flange of the plunger should rest directly on the drain. Then, make sure the cup completely covers the drain, creating a seal.

Check that there is still a seal by pressing the plunger down once and pulling it back up again. Press the plunger up and down at least five or six times or for about 25 to 30 seconds using force. Remove the seal to verify that your drain is unclogged. If most of the water drains from the bowl, you have eliminated the clog. Otherwise, plunge again. If you have attempted to plunge the toilet at least five times and it is still clogged, call a professional plumbing service.

The Plungerless Method

Don’t give up if you don’t have a plunger. Use common household items to get the job done. Pour a cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by slowly adding two cups of white vinegar. Add a bucket of hot (not boiling) water after an hour, then check if the clog has broken down. Alternatively, dish soap can be used in place of baking soda and vinegar. Wait an hour before adding hot water.
